MS Warrior and Former Fire Fighter Teresa Shares Her Story

erickaandersen

When were you diagnosed with MS and what was the first thing you did after you found out?

1996 Went to dinner and then Walmart. After I got home and researched it, I thought that they'd made a mistake.

What is something good that came out of your MS diagnosis?

Meeting a bunch of other MS patients.

How has MS affected your daily life?

35 years after being diagnosed, it is affecting me every minute of the day. I'm completely unable to drive, walk, or do my hobbies.

What is the greatest achievement you have done since being diagnosed and how were you able to achieve it?

I became a firefighter, rescue worker, and fire safety trainer for children to help them learn how to get out of the house when it was smoky. At the time, I was able-bodied. I knew that my life was basically over as I knew it and wanted to help as many people as I possibly could while I was able to.

What advice would you give to someone just finding out they have MS?

Take care of yourself! Eat right. DO NOT SMOKE. Enjoy life while you can!

Any other thoughts you would like to share?

I think that MS patients are isolated to a major degree and wish that I could find a way to make sure that we could all get laptops where we can communicate more.
